About

A price-first funeral home directory for cost-conscious families.

Cheap Funeral exists because funeral pricing in the United States is opaque, wildly variable, and the family asking the questions has the least time to compare.

The published price for an identical direct cremation can vary from $695 to $4,500 within the same metro for the same product. Most families learn this only when they have already committed emotionally to a provider. Cheap Funeral closes that information gap by surfacing the published General Price List (GPL) for every U.S. funeral home that files one.

What this directory is

A free, independent price-first directory of U.S. funeral homes with their published pricing for direct cremation, basic burial, memorial service, and starting price. Every home page shows the home's GPL prices, the home's price ranking within its state and the U.S., the home's distance from the searched ZIP, and the cheapest comparable homes within 50 miles. Nothing is paid placement.

What this directory is not

We are not a funeral home, a funeral home network, or a referral aggregator. We do not sell funeral services. We do not charge funeral homes to appear and our ranking is not influenced by any commercial relationship with any home. We are not affiliated with the National Funeral Directors Association or any state funeral directors association. For authoritative consumer-rights information, the Federal Trade Commission publishes the FTC Funeral Rule compliance guide and the FTC consumer guide to shopping for funeral services.

Editorial principles

  1. Published prices only. Every dollar amount on this site comes from the home's published General Price List under the FTC Funeral Rule (16 CFR Part 453). Where a home has not published a GPL we mark the listing accordingly rather than estimate.
  2. Anti-template anti-affiliate. Funeral homes do not pay to appear and do not pay for ranking. Our weekly enrichment scan pulls pricing from publicly-available GPLs and from direct GPL requests where the home does not publish online.
  3. Real federal regulations cited. Articles cite the Code of Federal Regulations directly (16 CFR Part 453, the FTC Funeral Rule). Dollar amounts come from primary sources — NFDA studies, SSA program rules, FEMA program announcements, state indigent burial program documents.
  4. No prediction, no estimation. We do not estimate what a funeral "should" cost. We publish what each home actually charges and let families compare.
  5. Open about limits. Some metros have fewer than three budget-tier providers. Some homes have not published GPLs. Some price categories vary too widely to be useful at the home level. We mark each of these gaps clearly.

How the price tiers work

We group every Cheap Funeral-listed home into three price tiers anchored to each home's state:

These tiers are FTC Funeral Rule compliant. They are not coupons, not promotional discounts, and not artificial markdowns. Each tier is anchored to the home's own published GPL and to the state-wide percentile distribution computed weekly across our full home set.
